Research Paper: Dilema de pasa y grifería (2018)-Cynthia Collazo Pacheco.pdf
In 2018, during senior year of my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, I conducted research on racialized perceptions of Afro hair in Puerto Rico. The research had a quantitative component with the responses of a questionnaire from 84 participants, in which the socio-cultural opinions on Afro-textured hair in Afro-descendant Puerto Rican women were explored. In addition, a qualitative component, I conducted in-depth interviews with three young Afro-descendant Puerto Rican women who wore their Afro-textured hair naturally. You can read the full research paper above.
Research
I was selected among hundreds of applicants to present the research findings at the Segundo Congreso de Afrodescendencia en Puerto Rico: Reconocimiento, Justicia, Desarrollo on October 31, 2018 and the XII Coloquio Nacional Sobre Las Mujeres: Precariedades, Resistencias y Feminismos in the Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras on April 5, 2019.
Status of Research 2026
Since 2019 the research has sparked a wide variety of interests and presents many opportunities for expansion. Thus, I am in the process of exploring support and collaborators for a second, more expanded phase of this research. This includes both institution-affiliated and independent research grants and partnerships.
